Climate Emergency

Costa Rica, like the rest of the world, is experiencing the effects of the climate emergency, with rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events disrupting natural ecosystems. These changes threaten biodiversity, particularly pollinators like bees, which are essential for food production and ecosystem stability. Prolonged droughts and unpredictable rain cycles impact flowering schedules, reducing the availability of nectar and pollen. This directly affects bee populations, which in turn affects plant reproduction and agricultural yields. The global decline in pollinators, exacerbated by climate change and habitat destruction, is a serious concern for food security and environmental balance.

To combat these challenges, we are actively working to support plant diversity and bee populations through strategic planting and conservation efforts on our Torunes organic coffee farm in Palmares. By mapping and inventorying trees, flowering plants, bushes, and vines, we are tracking bloom cycles and the nutrients they provide to our Melipona bee hives. Our collaboration with nonprofit SoulGives helps raise awareness about the importance of bees and the medicinal properties of Melipona honey, emphasizing the need for sustainable agricultural practices. We are also expanding our hives and encouraging neighboring farms to participate in pollinator-friendly initiatives, ensuring a more resilient ecosystem in the face of climate change.

The Silent Collapse: How Climate Change Is Destroying Bee Populations and Threatening Global Agriculture

The Climate Emergency: Its Impact on Costa Rica, the World, and Our Vital Pollinators

The climate emergency is no longer a distant threat—it is here, reshaping ecosystems, economies, and lives across the globe. Over the past decade, Costa Rica, renowned for its biodiversity and environmental leadership, has faced extreme weather patterns, rising temperatures, and ecological disruptions. Among the most alarming consequences is the declining bee population, a crisis threatening global food security and biodiversity. Without urgent intervention, the delicate balance of life is at risk.

How Has the Climate Emergency Affected Costa Rica in the Past 10 Years?

The past decade has seen dramatic climate shifts in Costa Rica, disrupting agriculture, biodiversity, and natural habitats.

  • Rising temperatures have led to prolonged droughts and increased forest fires, particularly in Guanacaste and other dry regions.

  • Unpredictable rainfall patterns have caused flooding in the Caribbean while leaving other areas in drought.

  • Ocean acidification and warming waters have affected marine biodiversity, including coral reefs and fisheries.

  • The loss of pollinators, primarily bees, has disrupted crop yields and native plant reproduction.

Costa Rica, despite its commitment to sustainability, has not been spared from these global trends, and the consequences for food production and ecosystems are dire.

How Has the Climate Crisis Affected the Global Bee Population?

The climate emergency is pushing bee populations to the brink, disrupting their habitats, food sources, and reproductive cycles.

  • Rising temperatures cause heat stress, leading to higher mortality rates.

  • Extreme weather events such as hurricanes, cold snaps, and prolonged droughts destroy flowers and nesting sites.

  • Shifts in bloom cycles leave bees without food sources at critical times.

  • Increased pesticide and chemical use, exacerbated by unpredictable weather, weakens immune systems and contributes to colony collapse disorder (CCD).

Without bees, global agriculture faces a dire future. Pollinators contribute to over 75% of the world’s food crops, including coffee, cacao, fruits, and vegetables. Their decline could result in widespread food shortages and economic collapse for agricultural communities.

How Has the Climate Crisis Affected Plant Growth and Agriculture?

Fluctuating temperatures and erratic rainfall patterns are devastating plant life, directly affecting food supply and natural ecosystems.

  • Heatwaves and droughts weaken crops and cause soil degradation.

  • Erratic rainfall patterns lead to flooding and soil erosion, reducing arable land.

  • Delayed or mismatched bloom cycles disrupt pollination, reducing fruit and seed production.

  • Invasive species and pests thrive in altered climates, further threatening native plant populations.

For small farms, like Torunes Farm Bee Oasis Costa Rica, these challenges make sustainable agriculture increasingly difficult. Without intervention, biodiversity loss will continue at an alarming rate.

What Can Be Done to Protect Bees and Restore Pollinator-Friendly Habitats?

Addressing the climate emergency requires immediate and sustained action at all levels—local, national, and global.

  • Plant native and pollinator-friendly flowers to provide consistent food sources.

  • Reduce pesticide use and switch to organic farming practices.

  • Support sustainable farms and initiatives that protect biodiversity.

  • Encourage reforestation projects to restore lost habitats.

  • Advocate for policies that combat climate change and protect pollinators.

Torunes Farm Bee Oasis Costa Rica is actively working on these solutions, but we need your help to expand our efforts.
